Physical Play Benefits of Den Building

Den building and den play supports children's physical development in so many different ways!

Outdoor Hub

Building strength, coordination, and confidence through den play!

💪 Strength & coordination

  • Lifting, carrying, and positioning materials (sticks, crates, fabrics) builds muscle strength in arms, shoulders and core
  • Coordinating movements while assembling the den improves whole-body coordination

🏃 Balance & Stability

  • Climbing over logs, stepping across uneven ground, or balancing while constructing helps develop balance and body control
  • Children learn to stabilise themselves while reaching, stretching or crouching

🤸 Spatial Awareness

  • Moving large objects and fitting them together supports understanding of space, size, and position
  • Children judge distances and navigate around structures safely

🧠 Motor Planning (Coordination of Movements)

  • Figuring out how to build a den encourages planning and sequencing movements
  • They adapt movements (push, pull, lift) depending on the materials

🦵 Endurance & Physical Stamina

  • Sustained activity (collecting, building, adjusting) helps build stamina and energy levels

🧗 Climbing & Crawling Skills

  • Entering and exiting dens promotes crawling, bending, and climbing, strengthening large muscle groups

👐 Hand–Body Connection

  • Though mainly gross motor, den building also supports how large body movements link with hand actions (e.g. holding while lifting)
