Active Boundaries & the PE Sport Premium

PE & Sport Premium has to make a measurable difference - and every pound needs to be justifiable. Our Active Boundaries range is built to do exactly that: getting more children moving, more often, in ways that are lasting, inclusive and embedded across the whole school day.

Outdoor Hub

Why Active Boundaries makes sense for your Premium spend

Children have a natural drive to explore boundaries - to climb over, crawl under and squeeze through. Our Active Boundaries range harnesses that instinct and turns it into sustained, purposeful physical activity. The result is an outdoor environment that works without a lesson plan, without constant adult facilitation, and without switching off after the first half-term.

It's not a one-off resource. It's a change to how your outdoor space works every day.

Supporting PE and Sport Premium outcomes

Active Boundaries provides a sustainable and impactful way to meet the core aims of the Premium:

  • Increase daily physical activity levels - giving children more opportunities to move across the school day, not just during timetabled PE
  • Develop fundamental movement skills - climbing, crawling, balancing and navigating builds coordination, agility and body awareness
  • Support active play and physical literacy from EYFS through to KS2 - with separate ranges designed for different age groups (OUT50 for ages 2–4, OUT80 for ages 5–11)
  • Engage less active and reluctant pupils - the open-ended, exploratory design invites curious children in; a tunnel, a gate or a stile can be an irresistible invitation to move for children who opt out of organised games
  • Embed physical activity beyond PE lessons - Active Boundaries integrates naturally into continuous provision and free play, not just timetabled sessions
  • Create genuinely inclusive play opportunities - children of different abilities, ages and confidence levels can all find their own way to engage with the same equipment
The children have been developing not only their spatial awareness and physical skills but their mathematical and expressive language, their technical skills in problem solving, positive relationships and imagination.

Using your PE & Sport Premium? Active Boundaries is a great fit.

PE & Sport Premium must be spent on improving and broadening the physical activity your school offers - and the resource has to be demonstrably additional to what you'd otherwise provide. Active Boundaries meets that bar clearly.

  • Moveable, versatile equipment that transforms any outdoor space into an active learning environment - no permanent installation, no groundworks
  • Encourages climbing, crawling, balancing and exploring - developing the fundamental movement skills that underpin all physical activity
  • Works across EYFS and primary (ages 2–11), with separate ranges designed for each age group
  • Supports continuous provision and active play without requiring adult supervision at every turn - the equipment works when you're not watching
  • Exclusive to Muddy Faces, and underpinned by strong research and pedagogy
  • Revenue spend, not capital - so it qualifies under PE Premium rules without requiring a separate budget approval

Built to last - and to keep being used

One of the biggest risks with Premium spending is buying something that gets used for a term and forgotten. Our Active Boundaries range is designed to avoid that. Because it works with children's intrinsic motivation to explore and test limits, engagement doesn't fade the way it does with structured equipment. It also works independently of staff, meaning it's active during break times, lunch and continuous provision - not just when a lesson is planned around it.

All of this is backed by research - see our evidence base below.

What does Active Boundaries look like in practice?

The range includes climbing stiles and bridges, tunnels and squeezes, and gates and pathways - each designed to prompt a different kind of movement and invite children to transition between play spaces.

Together they build strength, coordination and body awareness. They create zones children want to return to, crossing and recrossing throughout the day in ways that quietly but consistently add up to more time being active outdoors.
