Gates & doorways

Active Boundaries: children in the Early Years (and of all ages) have an endless fascination with exploring boundaries; given the opportunity they will actively cross over, under or through them.

The allure of gates for children is undeniable; the simple act of passing through them, with their dynamic possibilities of swinging, opening, closing and securing can be a captivating experience.

Beyond the gate 4

Exploration

Exploring the engineering required to make a gate work requires problem-solving, spatial-awareness, communication and turn-taking.

Beyond their functional aspects, gates are portals to new places; gateways to creative and imaginative play.

This all explains why it can take children so long to pass through a doorway or gate!

Design & meaning

The manner in which we adorn gates and doorways reflects the significance we attribute to them.

Gates are not just physical means to enter and leave a place, they protect us from intruders, they can be art, they can represent wealth & power, they are emotional and poignant - ‘I'm leaving,’ ‘I'm home’ .

Enabling environments

When passing through your local neighbourhood slow down and let children have time to observe and investigate. Observe children interacting with their environment - they are using and developing skills in STEM, art, language & communication. Support them to interact with shadows, shape and texture.

Delving Deep - Language

Exploring the language we use can be fascinating, beneficial and inspiring.

Gate

  • Definition - a movable barrier, usually hinged, for closing an opening in a wall, fence, etc. An opening to allow passage into or out of an enclosed place.
  • History - derived from old Norse gat meaning road or path, but other terms include yett and port. The concept originally referred to the gap or hole in a wall or fence, rather than the barrier which closed it.

Door

  • Definition - a flat object that is used to close the entrance of something such as a room or building, or the entrance itself.
  • History - the English word for “door” comes from the Old English duru or dor. Very similar words are found in the Scandinavian languages: dør in Danish and Norwegian, and dörr in Swedish. Similar words are also found in the Germanic languages: deur in Dutch and Tür in German.

Way

I thought it was also useful to include the word "way" as we often refer to them as a doorway or gateway. "Way" has two definitions which are both relevant:

  • Definition - a method, style, or manner of doing something; an optional or alternative form of action.
  • Definition - a road, track, or path for travelling along.

The gateway and doorway describe a specific manner by which you will be crossing the boundary, eg. stepping up a step, bending down to pass under a low beam, but they also create a distinctive path to travel along. Its likely this is the only way in or out.

Footpath Gate 50cm

From: £194.99 exVAT

Muddy Faces has innovatively crafted and engineered this specialised footpath gate for educational settings.

Footpath gates, commonly known as kissing gates, can take a bit of working out even for adults to pass through, particularly if you have a rucksack on or you have an unnerved dog with you. The challenge is what provides such a captivating experience. Children find themselves compelled to cooperate, unravelling the puzzle of passage.

Available in various heights, this gate is not just an accessory; it's value can be developed with thoughtful placement - rather than simply placing it in your outdoor space, consider establishing a boundary and utilising the gate as a way to traverse it purposefully.

Bridges & stiles appeal to children’s innate urge to climb and elevate themselves off the ground even when it is a challenge, perhaps because it is a challenge. Vertical exploration needs coordination, balance, strength & bravery. It can take repeated attempts and determination to master the skills needed to scale an obstacle.

Traversing through a tunnel offers a holistic and sensory-rich experience, as well as engaging various muscle sets as children bend and crawl. The senses come alive - feeling changes in texture, altered light, echoey or muffled sounds, smells and the airflow different from the open space.

Tunnels can provide a mysterious journey, entering from one end and emerging somewhere new can create a portal for the imagination.
