Egg ice decorations
Iced egg decorations are fun to make and look great!
Introduction
A great children's winter activity that is fun to do for little fingers and the frozen eggs feel and look fab! A great chance to explore ice and decorate the bare trees in your setting.
* Muddy Faces actively promotes child-led outdoor play & learning. We recognise and believe in the curiosity that children have and their drive to explore and discover. We hope that you will bear this in mind when considering more prescribed activities like this one – often much more creative ideas will occur if resources are simply provided and children are given the time and space to explore independently.
Thanks to Kind, Wald und Wiese for sharing their idea on social media - we love it!

Health & Safety Considerations
Follow your usual operating procedures and carry out appropriate risk benefit assessments.
Some considerations particular to this activity include:
- picking natural materials
Step #1 Break the top of the egg
Break the top off an egg (fresh, not boiled) by gently tapping the top. We used a knife but you could use a stick.
Once you have created a small hole carefully take off bits of the shell to create a small opening - big enough to add your natural materials.
Pour out the egg white and yolk and use this for making an omelette or Campfire 'doughnuts'! No waste...
Step #2 add the natural materials
Place the empty egg shells back in the egg box to keep them upright and add your natural materials - berries look great for the lovely bright colours.
Once you've added the natural materials pour water into the egg until it reaches the top of the intact shell.
Then add your string by creating a loop and dipping the two ends into the egg.
Step #3 Ready to freeze!
We left them overnight when the temperature was below freezing (you could also stick them in the freezer).
Step #4 Peel off the shell & hang up!
It is fun to peel off the shell! Make sure you have hold of the loop as they can pop/slip out easily.
Hang up and admire :)
