World Sparrow Day
Once a familiar sight for most of us, the house sparrow is now a declining species, with numbers crashing by 69% in the past 5 decades. The plight of the diminutive sparrow mirrors the difficulties many other small birds face, with loss of habitat, reduction of natural food sources, predation and climate change just some of the causes.
World Sparrow Day aims to inspire people around the world to help the sparrow and other common bird species.
By putting up a terrace-style nestbox this spring you will be playing your part to support this much-loved struggling species, and you could even attract a whole community of sparrows, filling your garden with the sound of their cheerful chirping!
