Bog Day, fourth Sunday in July (2026: 26 July)
Bog Day is an international awareness day celebrating the importance of bogs, fens, swamps and other peatland habitats. It takes place each year on the fourth Sunday in July and aims to raise awareness of peatlands – the benefits they provide, the threats they face and how we can help protect them.
Peatlands may seem quiet and overlooked, but they play a vital role in supporting wildlife, storing carbon and helping to regulate water and prevent flooding. They are also rich and unusual habitats, full of specialised plants and insects
Bog Day is a great opportunity to explore local wetland areas, learn about peatlands, or take part in simple activities such as observing plants, listening for wildlife, or watching short films about bog habitats. The official website includes some lovely, accessible videos that help explain peatlands in a clear and engaging way.
