Black History Month

Black History Month takes place throughout October and provides an opportunity to recognise, celebrate and learn about the contributions, experiences and achievements of Black people in the UK and around the world. It encourages reflection, conversation and greater understanding of the individuals, communities and histories that have helped shape society.

2026 theme: Honouring Our Communities

The 2026 theme is Honouring Our Communities, recognising the people whose everyday contributions help support, strengthen and sustain communities.

The theme celebrates volunteers, educators, carers, community leaders and others whose work often goes unseen but plays an important role in creating connections, opportunities and a sense of belonging.

A Muddy Faces perspective

At Muddy Faces, we believe everyone should have opportunities to experience the benefits of outdoor play, nature connection and spending time outdoors. Black History Month provides an opportunity to reflect on whose stories, experiences and perspectives are represented in outdoor spaces, and how we can help create environments where everyone feels welcome, included and able to connect with nature.

Access to parks, green spaces, outdoor learning opportunities and nature-rich experiences can play an important role in supporting happy, healthy and thriving children, families and communities. By listening to diverse voices and experiences, we can help ensure outdoor spaces are places of belonging, participation and connection for all.
