Event Details

Children don’t all learn, communicate, participate or feel comfortable in the same way.

So, what happens when, instead of always expecting the learner to fit the activity, we ask how the activity, environment and practitioner can respond to the person in front of us?

In one hour you'll:

  • See how inclusive outdoor learning is being adapted across very different real-world settings.
  • Hear honest examples of what has worked, what hasn’t, and what practitioners have changed in response.
  • Take away practical ideas you can adapt to your own children, space and resources.
  • Build a clearer framework for responding to individual needs, choice, participation, communication and appropriate risk.
  • Think differently about a key question: does the learner need to fit the activity - or can the activity respond to the learner?

What will we explore?

Outdoor learning can create different ways for children to move, communicate, take appropriate risks, develop practical competence, connect with others and experience a sense of belonging.

But simply taking children outside does not automatically make an experience inclusive.

We’ll explore questions such as:

  • Who is able to participate - and who is finding it difficult?
  • What might a child’s behaviour be communicating?
  • How do sensory needs, communication, regulation and confidence affect participation?
  • When should the practitioner step in - and when should they step back?
  • How can an activity be adapted around a learner?
  • How do we balance safety, autonomy and appropriate risk?
