Forest Education Network England: National CPD Event

Following the success of FEN’s first national CPD event in 2017 we are delighted to announce the details of the second event, taking place in the National Forest at Rosliston Forestry Centre, South Derbyshire.

Whether you are a teacher, forest school practitioner, outdoor learning provider, woodland owner, or simply interested in Britain’s forests and woodland, this biannual event will provide you with sources of information, advice and valuable networks to improve your knowledge and practice.

The day is designed to expand delegates’ knowledge and understanding of the ecology and management of the UK’s forests and woodlands and provide them with practical advice.

In the diverse woodlands of Rosliston Forestry Centre, delegates will participate in three inspiring and practical workshop sessions led by national forestry and education experts.

Workshop A: From tree to wood product! Information, resources and activities on how we use British trees
Workshop B: Caring for our trees! Identification skills and tree health awareness to understand and protect our woodlands
Workshop C: Creating Forests for Learning! Creating new woodland sites for schools and managing existing woodland sites for schools.

The event will offer plenty of chances to get outside and explore the heart of the National Forest. In addition, Woodland Trust will be providing an overview of their new ‘Tree Tools for Schools’ resource. This free, online resource has activities linked to the primary curriculum and supports many of the topics covered in this CPD event. There will be opportunities for networking with other forest educators and browsing the forest education resources on display.

Nature Play & the Therapeutic Space (two-day training)

An experiential training for health and education practitioners wanting to work in ‘Green Spaces.’ No previous experience is necessary but would suit people working with children or young people. This two-day training has been created to help those working with groups of young people and children to understand why some children present difficult behaviours and are unable to participate in the group activities.

You will develop your facilitation skills and ability to work with children that present difficult behaviours and explore therapeutic nature-play skills (e.g. reflective communication and use of puppets & sand) which will engage the group of children and individuals building their emotional regulation, curiosity, imagination and well-being.

The course will include:

Therapeutic nature play.
The Forest School Continuum.
Exploring effective strategies for working with children displaying vulnerable and challenging needs.
Establishing Trust: understanding the fundamental importance of safe space/s and how to utilise it.
Psych-ed: Understanding difficult behaviours and the connection between sensory input, emotional response and behaviour (with the impact of ACE).
Explore your own triggers and inner landscape.
Play ideas: child-led and adult-directed e.g ropes and clay.
Key communication strategies: creative, reflective and empathetic skills.
Increase the tool kit to include more sensory-based games.
Develop understanding of Attachment Theory and how it relates to emotional insecurity.
Play skills include sand, puppet and music.
Day one

Theory: Child development and attachment; How to grow a brain, Psych-ed; Importance of nature in childhood; Sensory Play and Stress; Group Dynamic: Importance of connection to others; 7 basic emotions; Exploring your own triggers & inner landscape.
Activities: Role-play: The brain, baby to adult; group work to develop your skills and confidence. Group games and sensory experiences – forest school approach and the creative use of clay.
Day two

Builds on the outdoor skills of participants – e.g. using ropes, puppets, story making.
Setting up your space – tarps, shelters and safe dens.
Importance of risk and challenge. Focus on the need for individual therapeutic play when working with groups and developing skills.
Theory: The Axline principles; Toxic Stress; Eric Berne: Drama Triangle; Attunement; Principles of child-led play – nature play/therapeutic play; Communication skills – instruction/reflection; Safe boundaries & Health and Safety in the outdoors; Risk Assessment; Directive/non-directive.

Forest School Training Level 3 with an FSA Endorsed Trainer!

Approved by the Forest School Association and awarded by the Open College Network West Midlands, this Level 3 Certificate provides the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to prepare learners for employment as a Forest School Leader.

The training will combine key principles of Forest School with best practice from Environment and Nature Education, child development, the world of play (wild, free and therapeutic play) delivered by our professional team who have many years experience.

Circle of Life Training are now providing online learning resources to supplement this in-depth direct training. These documents are laid out in an easy to understand format that link to the Forest School Units. We also supply useful video material, links to best practice, a student upload to share valuable resources and the option to download resources for you to keep.

We have been running Forest School programmes at Scotswood Garden for 10 years and delivering training for the last 6 years. We are the only Forest School Association recognised provider in Tyne and Wear, and we recently won a national Outdoor Learning Award for our Breeze Forest School programme.

Family Forest School Fun

Go on an adventure this Easter holidays with our Forest School inspired session set in the heart of Lee Valley Regional Park. The kids will learn about the wonder of nature through wild play in our tree park at Waltham Abbey Gardens as well as use basic bushcraft tools and take inspiration from the world around them to create works of art and craft a journey stick to take home with them. This session is great for school holiday fun and as part of a home schooling programme Plus accompanying adults go FREE!
Please be aware, many paths are not paved and uneven or have vegetation, which maybe difficult for prams and wheelchairs.
Dress ready for the weather, there maybe mud!
Booking is required for this event
Suitable for 4-12 year olds. All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Forest School Leader ITC Level 3 Award – HYBRID COURSE

We’re the only Forest School training provider to incorporate the Floorbook Approach created by Dr Claire Warden, in our training. This child led approach to planning and documentation supports key learning associated with Forest School themes and many aspects of the Curriculum for Excellence. It allows the transfer of information and methodology back to the school, linking learning across the areas of inside, outside and beyond. The Floorbook Approach is currently promoted by Education Scotland, Care Inspectorate and other governing bodies as good practice.

This ITC qualification is approved by and meets the requirements of the Forest School Association.

Our Forest School hybrid course has been developed for staff who may struggle to take 5 days out of their busy lives to receive the traditional format of theory and practice in face to face training.

The course consists of 11 online modules exploring the theoretical aspects of Forest School. Within these you will be asked to reflect upon their own practice and document your learning. 5 pre-requisite modules will be provided upon your enrolment and payment. These should be completed prior to your face to face training, the remaining modules can be completed within 6 months of registration.

You will attend 2.5 days face to face training in the practical aspects of Forest School, during this time our trainer will assess your skill levels.

The course culminates in your creation of a Forest School portfolio to evidence the five Forest School Level 3 units of Delivery, Learning and Development, Planning and Preparation, Practical Skills and Woodland Environment. Supportive learning materials, remote trainer and online support are provided.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:
– Understand the structures of woodlands.
– Know how to identify a range of flora and fauna.
– Understand the importance of flora and fauna identification for the Forest School Programme Leader.
– Understand the management of woodlands as a sustainable learning environment.
– Be able to deliver a Forest School programme.
– Understand relevant theories of learning and development and their application to a Forest School programme.
– Understand how a Forest School programme can support holistic development and learning.
– Understand the impact of behaviour on learning and development at a Forest School programme.
– Be able to reflect on your own Forest School training.
– Understand the development of the Forest School ethos.
– Understand the ecological impact of a Forest School programme.
– Know the relevant policies and procedures requires for a Forest School programme.
– Be able to plan a Forest School programme.
– Be able to facilitate a range of woodland skills appropriate to a Forest School programme.
– Be able to facilitate campfire management appropriate to a Forest School programme.

Course Involvement Level:
– 2.5 days face to face training in the outdoors.
– 11 online modules (estimated duration for completion 65 hours – including assignments and reflection time).
– Delivery of 6 sessions over 6 weeks whilst tracking the progress of 3 children.
– Portfolio evidence to be submitted within 1 year.

Mindstretchers will take responsibility for the delivery of the entire programme and this will include the registration of candidates with ITC, support with course bookings, the administration of course delivery, evaluation of course outputs and initial report, on-going and final reports regarding the contract. Methodology follows ITC guidelines. We believe in equal opportunities allowing candidates to present evidence through a range of techniques: video, written portfolio, artistic representation and Floorbooks.

Learners will learn about these topics:
– Woodland habitats – its structure, species identification and sustainable management.
– Programme delivery – it’s planning, management and safe facilitation.
– Monitoring, tracking and evaluating children’s progress over their time at Forest School.
– The theory behind Forest School – understanding how the whole child develops during their Forest School sessions.
– Reflection of practice to move forward in your personal development.
– Support in creation of a Forest School handbook.
– Develop practical bush craft skills in shelter construction, knots, tool use, fire management and cooking outdoors.
– Assessment tasks will result in each candidate producing a portfolio of evidence meeting each assessment criteria in each unit.

MINIMUM AGE:
19 years. You should have some experience of working outside with children prior to attending the course.

Please be aware this involves submission of a portfolio to an academic level equivalent to the first year of a degree. We can accept a range of evidence for people with specific learning requirements. You should have some experience of working outside with children prior to attending the course.

5 days training – 14-18 September – 96 guided learning hours, portfolio of evidence to be handed in within a year
